Today, 15th July: Raising Day: The Poona Horse. Heroes in Uniform

Today 15th July is the 203rd Raising Day of The Poona Horse. The regiment was raised at Shirur near Poona, this day in 1817. In its eventful journey spanning two centuries, this cavalry regiment, 17 Horse, The Poona Horse is known for its valour in both the Raj-era and post Independence, with 34 battle and theatre honours to its credit, possibly the highest by any unit.

Having earned the highest military honour of 4 #VictoriaCrosses in the British era, the regiment later brought home decisive victories in the ‘Battle of #Phillora’ in 1965 and ‘Battle of #Basantar’ in 1971 Indo-Pak war, with an officer winning India’s highest gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra, in each war. Can you guess who?
